A southern Indiana community showed its support for a firefighter who died after a battle with colon cancer.

Jeffersonville Deputy Fire Chief Bruce DeArk died peacefully at his home after a four-year struggle with stage-four colon cancer.

On Tuesday, a funeral was held at Southeast Christian Church. After that, a procession of fire trucks followed as emergency vehicles led his family and loved ones to Hillcrest Cemetery in Utica, where DeArk was buried.

DeArk had been with the department since 2001.

He worked tirelessly: Jeffersonville fire deputy chief dies after battle with cancer

“After his diagnosis, Bruce started his battle and endured many tough treatments to combat his aggressive disease all while advocating for early-warning cancer detection for firefighters, which will undoubtedly save the lives of many,” the fire department said in a statement.

Fire officials believe DeArk’s cancer was likely attributed to his work fighting fires.
