Roanoke’s Dr. Josette Richmond named ‘Animal Rescue Hero’ by Red Cross

ROANOKE, Va. – The American Red Cross acknowledges heroes who serve around the Southwest Chapter every year.

Red Cross will highlight a total of 10 heroes this month. The first hero recognized is someone who devotes themselves to helping our furry friends in need—Dr. Josette Richmond.

Richmond is the Medical Director and Chief Surgeon at Roanoke’s Angels of Assisi Community Pet Clinic.

She and her team have saved many animals, most notably one by the name of Luna.

In late November, Luna, who was extremely emaciated and close to death, was rushed to the clinic. The dog’s owners had abandoned the poor dog at a park in Roanoke and left her tied to a pole.

Richmond worked tirelessly to make sure Luna had every chance to make it—and she did.

About a month later after Luna was found abandoned, she made an appearance at Southwest Virginia Ballet’s performance of ‘The Nutcracker.’

Richmond said she’s passionate about working with pet families in rural communities and making sure they can keep their animals healthy even if they have limited funds.

She currently commutes all the way from West Virginia, staying in Roanoke from Monday morning until Thursday evening.

Richmond will be further acknowledged at the Red Cross’ The Help Can’t Wait – A Celebration of Heroes event.

It is scheduled virtually for April 19 from 8 am. to 9 a.m.
