Firefighters rescue cat stuck in Lee County tree for over a day

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WBBH) – The saying goes curiosity killed the cat, but that wouldn’t be allowed to happen on a firefighter’s watch.

Crews from the Iona-McGregor Fire District were called out after a cat was found stuck in a tree.

“We respond to a bunch of different types of calls,” said Firefighter Marin Schmidt. “It’s not all running into burning buildings and saving babies.”

No babies needed saving, but the cat did.

Iona-McGregor firefighters used their ladder truck to reach the cat stuck about 70-80 feet in the air.

They were called by the feline’s owner who told them the cat went up into the tree over the weekend and has been there since.

Firefighter Schmidt went up into the bucket to rescue the cat whose meows for help could be heard from the ground.

Needless to say, the kitty was more than thrilled to see Schmidt reach out to save it.

“Excited? Yeah, sure. You could say excited. Excited to get down,” Schmidt said. “The owner was very, very thankful. She was caught up in tears at the end of all of it.”

The fire department wants to remind residents to always call emergency responders, no matter how big or small the call might be.
