A local neighborhood is missing a plaque and now a reward is being offered to find it.

The $250 reward is being offered up by Aaron Skonhovd and others, for anybody with information that could lead to the recovery of the Phillips House plaque at Terrace Park in Sioux Falls.

“It’s only worth $35 in scrap, for cast aluminum, but it costs over $2,500 to replace,” Skonhovd said.

The sign went missing the last week of April, according to Skonhovd who walks by the area almost daily.

The plaque cost $2,500 to make, Skonhovd said. It told the story of the house that once stood in the area that is now Terrace Park.

“I can understand how someone can make a mistake. We just want them to be able to come forward and fix those mistakes,” Skonhovd told the Argus Leader, “And we will give $250 for information that leads to the retrieval of the plaque.”

Skonhovd said he’s checked Covell Lake to see if anybody threw the plaque in but hasn’t found anything yet.

The Terrace Park Neighborhood Association unveiled the plaque dedicated to the old Phillips House in December 2020.

Skonhovd said the reward money will go to replacing the plaque if it is not recovered. A GoFundMe has also been established to cover the replacement costs.

About the Phillips House

The house built in 1883 at a cost of $50,000. It was an Italianate-style three-story house with exquisite woodwork and gold-plated hardware throughout the inside. The first two stories were constructed of Sioux quartzite. The third story, complete with a lookout, was made of wood, according to information given to the Argus Leader by Skonhovd.

The house was demolished on Oct. 1, 1966.
