Reward offered after kittens abandoned on side of Southington road

SOUTHINGTON — An animal rights group is offering a reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for abandoning six kittens on the side of a road.

The kittens, which are friendly and are believed to have been pets, were found in the Crescent Lake area of Southington, parkland in the northeastern corner of town.

“Someone was passing by and was able to scoop them up,” Animal Control Officer Josh Karabin said.

The good Samaritan who found the kittens almost ran them over, said Zilla Cannamela, president of Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates.

“They caught her attention just out of the corner of her eye,” she said.

“It just boggles my mind. Kittens.”

The woman stayed with the kittens to keep them safe and had someone get her a cat carrier. She put them in the carrier, and they are with the town’s animal control facility.

Cannamela said she learned about the woman’s discovery when the rescuer posted a picture of the kittens on a Southington residents’ Facebook page.

Her organization is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for dumping the kittens, she said. She asked people to call Southington Animal Control at 860-628-8053 for information.

People have already been calling about the kittens asking if they can adopt them.

“I already came in this morning to a bunch of calls,” Karabin said. “They’ll be in homes quick.”
