Wellsville council swears in new full-time firefighter

WELLSVILLE — Village council hired a new full-time firefighter Tuesday night.

Fire Chief Barry Podwel had recommended that Cody Cole, who had been serving as assistant fire chief for the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department, be appointed to the spot and sworn in at the meeting.

Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah reported that Mayor Bob Boley signed the extension agreement for the Wastewater Treatment Plant project, which extends the time to do the work until Dec. 31. She also added that the Ohio Shared Service System should reimburse the first pay request from Rudzik Excavating, which is working on the reservoir project after the village paid it.

Bills totaling $13,484.66 were paid, the majority of it was spent to install a concrete pad for fuel tanks and two garage doors at the cemetery.

In other action, residents continue to vocalize complaints about neighboring properties’ lack of upkeep; a lack of supervision of children in the neighborhood by their guardians; and untethered dogs running loose. Boley promised to investigate these issues.

Matt Brophey made a presentation to council regarding a project proposal that could save the village $770,000 over the next 25 years by renting a solar energy system from Scout Solar on their electric bills. If they rent the system, they can receive the total savings up front.

The Wellsville Pumpkin Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, a Wellsville chamber representative announced at the meeting. Free and open to the public, it will include live animals, vendors and rides.

The next council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 in village hall.
