Firefighters are a different breed—they run towards danger instead of running away from it. We have that emotional visual of them running into a burning building to save a life….ready to do battle without flinching. Their mission is to save and they do that brilliantly and bravely and with great resolve. Their training is long and hard, but those who make it through are the best of the best.
And the ‘best of the best’ of fire rescue is who the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce honors every year, and it has been AMR –American Medical Response—who sponsors this meeting year after year. As part of each year’s program, the participating fire rescue departments are invited to select their “Above and Beyond winner to be recognized and awarded with gifts. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is the largest in the county with 68 fire rescue stations in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and serving 29 municipalities. They have response units dedicated to air rescue service, ocean rescue, fire and rescue operations, marine, hazardous materials (HazMat), urban search and rescue (US&R), technical rescue, and venom response.. Almost the entire leadership team of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was there, including Deputy Fire Chief Danny Cardeso, Assistant Fire Chief Jason Fernandez, EMS Division Chief Shanti Hall, Division Chief Michael Eng, and EMS Division OIC Miguel Yanes. Special Operations Chief Brandon Webb, who heads up Florida Task Force 1 that is called to provide help at disasters around the world ….earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and more. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue K-9 Charlie was there, eager to check out Karma, the ‘canine queen of socializing’, a pet therapy K-9 from AMR. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Above & Beyond winners were Firefighter/Paramedic Idalmis Roberts and Capt. Alejandro Lozano who proudly accepted the gifts and recognition .
From Hollywood Fire Rescue, EMS Division Chief Simon Serrao was there with Chief James Russo and their Above & Beyond Winner, Firefighter/Paramedic Jaime Gonzalez and their K-9.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue’s Above & Beyond winner, Driver/Engineer Yvette De La Torre attended and Chief Jeff Levy, EMS Director for Hatzalah (who is also Deputy Chief of the Lauderhill Fire Dept.) was there with his Above & Beyond winner, Yoshi Hagler.
