Newmarket man arrested after attempt to use stolen bank card

A Newmarket man has been arrested after a bank card was stolen from a vehicle in Arthur.

An unknown person had broken a window on a vehicle parked on George Street Arthur and had stolen items from inside Sept. 18, according to a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) news release.

The victim advised police that a stolen bank card had been used at a local business. A short time later, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person that was trying to use a bank card that kept being declined at business on Wellington Road 109.

Officers determined that the bank card being used had been stolen from the parked vehicle earlier.

Alexandru Vatamanescu, 34, is charged with: possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; possession of break in instruments; mischief under $5,000; and unauthorized use of credit card.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on Nov. 17, 2023.
