Tulsa Animal Welfare launches overcrowding initiative on social media

After a year over 100% capacity, Tulsa Animal Welfare is launching a new initiative on social media to illustrate ongoing challenges, highlight extended-stay dogs and promote adoptions.

The shelter, currently the temporary home for 340 animals, is sharing statistics weekly at facebook.com/tulsaanimalwelfare, as well as photos of dogs that have not yet been adopted several weeks after intake.

“Unfortunately, our dog intakes are more than we can handle, and we are back to having no space within our walls,” Tulsa Animal Welfare officials said in a post Sept. 13. “Having no space means we sometimes have to make hard decisions to save the lives and health of all of the animals at the shelter.

“While we are working harder than we ever have in our programming efforts and with our agency partners, we must do all we can to save the lives of adoptable pets in Tulsa.”

All adoption fees at Tulsa Animal Welfare have been suspended, according to a news release. Those waived fees include the adoption itself, along with spay/neuter services, up-to-date vaccinations, microchipping and a one-year pet license.

At least two dogs have already been adopted since last week after being featured on the extended-stay list, according to the shelter. One dog was taken into foster care, another option for families interested in helping, after his photo was highlighted.

“This initiative really shows our desire to stay transparent with our community while showcasing the amazing dogs we have here at Tulsa Animal Welfare,” Sherri Carrier, shelter manager, said in a news release. “We’re really asking for the community’s help as we work to adopt out some of the long-term stays so we can save lives and create happy and loving homes for these wonderful animals.”

To inquire about any of the animals, go to the shelter at 3031 N. Erie Ave., open 2-6 p.m. daily.
