Lee County sheriff’s deputy named First Friday Hero after saving 1-year-old girl

Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Cook has been named the First Friday Hero for the month of December for saving a 1-year-old girl from choking.

Piedmont Columbus Regional will honor Cook during a Dec. 12 ceremony at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. His story has been featured throughout the hospital on commemorative posters and Piedmont Columbus Regional’s social media pages.

Cook responded to a call on Sept. 24 concerning an unresponsive baby. After the deputy arrived, he cleared the child’s airway and began stimulating her while reassuring her mother that everything was going to be okay.

EMS arrived on the scene and transported the toddler to Piedmont Columbus Regional’s Pediatric Emergency Department for further care.

Cook said it felt like the earth stood still as he saved the child’s life. He said “it’s a different type of scream when a mother screams for her child.” He was overjoyed when he learned the child recovered and returned home to her parents.

The First Friday Hero program was created by Piedmont Columbus Regional in the mid-2016 to recognize first responders each month who have gone above and beyond to the call of duty.

“Their line of work is often a thankless job, and we want to make the community aware of our local heroes and all they do to make the Chattahoochee Valley a better and safer place,” Piedmont Columbus Regional CEO Scott Hill said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office showed appreciation to everyone who helped save the child.

“We are grateful to have quick-thinking deputies like Deputy Cook and community partners like Smiths Station Fire & Rescue working together to keep citizens of Lee County safe,” said Jessica Henderson, LCSO’s media and community relations specialist.
