Clinton man charged in sexual abuse case

A Clinton man has pleaded not guilty to multiple sexual abuse felonies in Clinton County District Court.

Brandon Michael Schutte, 33, has been charged with three counts that are Class D felonies as well as two Class C felony counts — sexual exploitation of a minor and third-degree sexual abuse.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Clinton County Courts earlier this week, Schutte’s alleged crimes were discovered when a mother went through electronic devices belonging to her teenage daughter. In an April 2023 interview with the girl, she stated that she started communicating with Schutte on SnapChat after a break-up with a boyfriend.

A no-contact order is in effect.

The Class D felonies are punishable under Iowa Code by up to five years imprisonment. Sexual exploitation of a minor and third-degree sexual abuse are both class C felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 1.
