PEMBROKE —Two local firefighters were on the right ice at the right time Wednesday evening, when their training helped save a hockey player who went into cardiac arrest during an adult-league game in Pembroke.
Duxbury call firefighter/EMT Scott Hill was playing in a hockey game at Hobomock Arena in Pembroke around 8 p.m. on May 15 when a 64-year-old man from the other team became unresponsive and went into cardiac arrest, according to Duxbury Deputy Fire Chief Brian Monahan.
Hill, along with off-duty Braintree firefighter Brian Oriola, performed CPR and used the rink’s automated external defibrillator to successfully revive the man,” Monahan said in a post to the Duxbury Fire Department’s Facebook page on Friday.
The Pembroke Fire Department arrived soon after and took over care of the man, who was taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately available.
“This successful outcome illustrates the importance of the American Heart Associations ‘Chain of Survival,’ Monhan said in the post. “Immediate call to 911, immediate CPR and use of an on-site (defibrillator) all played a successful roll in this case.”
