Two arrested, one wanted in deadly Sumter drive-by shooting

Two men were arrested and one is wanted in the deadly shooting that killed 59-year-old Blaine Varner on Monday.

During a press conference on Friday, Sumter Police Chief Russell F. Roark, III announced the updates in the ongoing investigation.

Di’Mitrius Reed, 18 is wanted for murder. Authorities say he is considered armed and dangerous.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that can lead to Reed’s arrest.

Travis Rembert Jr., 20, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Kalvin Epps, 26, was arrested on Monday and is charged with felon in possession of a firearm and possession of marijuana.

Authorities say additional charges could be filed against the three as the investigation continues.

Rembert and Epps are currently being held in the county jail.

Authorities say the incident began with a planned sale and purchase of a firearm between two of the suspects based on information gathered.

During the transaction, a white GMC pickup truck drove by firing shots, according to authorities.

The suspects then got in their vehicles and began chasing through a residential area.

59-year-old Blaine Varner was not involved, but was shot in the crossfire. His vehicle crashed into a brick fence on Saratoga Street as the chase went on. He died from his injuries.

Epps was found on Magnolia Street and arrested, the GMC truck was found abandoned shortly after. Records show it was stolen from a home that morning.

Rembert was arrested during a traffic stop.
