Firefighter rescues man from Brooklyn apartment fire on way to work

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – An FDNY firefighter rescued a man from a Brooklyn apartment fire on his way to work on Friday, according to officials.

Joe Pendergast saw smoke billowing from the apartment and ran inside without any gear or backup, the FDNY said. He found a man and an e-bike engulfed in flames inside.

The man was trying to save his dogs when Pendergast rescued him, according to the FDNY. Pendergast was able to get the man out of the apartment and closed the door to keep flames from spreading.

Pendergast burned his arm during the rescue mission. A second e-bike exploded as they were leaving, according to the FDNY.

Fire crews quickly responded to the scene and were able to rescue the four dogs from inside the apartment.
