Farmville man faces arson and animal cruelty charges after dog locked in burning home

A Farmville man was arrested by the Greenville Police Department on Thursday and is being accused of locking a dog in a room of a home that he had set on fire following a domestic altercation.

According to court documents, Deanegelo Godard, 23, is facing multiple charges including felony cruelty to animals, second-degree arson, and domestic violence.

Court documents reveal that Godard allegedly set a home on fire at 5190 A Deveron St. in Greenville on Sunday, July 7.

Greenville authorities tell us that this started as a call for service for a domestic altercation around 2 p.m. when the victim reported she was punched and assaulted by her boyfriend. The victim told authorities that she left the home and was able to get a ride to a nearby restaurant before calling for help. Greenville Police Department officers escorted her back to her home to retrieve some belongings and upon arrival discovered the home was on fire. The home was cleared and the victim’s dog was rescued from a back bedroom.

Godard is currently detained at the Pitt County Detention Center and facing the following charges:

  • Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence
  • Cruelty to Animals
  • Arson, Second Degree
  • Injury to Personal Property
  • Injury to Real Property
  • Failure to Appear – Simple Possess Sch VI CS
  • Failure to Appear – DWLR Not Impaired Rev
  • Failure to Appear – Fail to Notify DMV Addr Change
  • Failure to Appear – Identity Theft
  • Failure to Appear – Financial Card Fraud.

Godard’s total bond amount, for all charges, is $380,300.
