Judge shaves year off sentence in child sex abuse case

BARRE — A judge has shaved a year off of a Granite City man’s sentence in a child sex abuse case after the man sought a sentence reduction.

Roland Withers, 40, was sentenced in January in Washington County criminal court in Barre to 25 years to life, all suspended except for 19 years and six months to serve on two felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child younger than 13, two felony counts of cruelty to a child by subjecting them to sexual conduct, a felony count of second-degree aggravated domestic assault and a misdemeanor count of cruelty to a child. Withers pleaded no contest to the domestic assault charge and he pleaded guilty to the other charges during a hearing in January 2023.
