An Omaha man must serve two years of probation and is forbidden to own animals for 15 years after being found guilty of neglect of a dog resulting in death.
Gabriel Moore, 35, pleaded no contest Tuesday in Douglas County District Court to abandonment or cruel neglect of animal resulting in death, a felony, as part of a plea agreement. He had initially been charged with intentional cruelty to an animal and faced up to three years in prison.

According to an arrest affidavit for Moore, the dog was reported to the Nebraska Humane Society as abandoned at a downtown Omaha apartment complex Aug. 9, 2023. Moore had been incarcerated earlier that month on allegations of misdemeanor sexual assault.
On Aug. 11, Humane Society animal-control officers entered the apartment to recover the dog. They found the dog suffering from burns across her entire body, which were in various stages of healing. Veterinarians took skin swabs of the burns and, because of Moore’s recent arrest on suspicion of sexual assault, they also collected a vaginal swab from the dog.

The samples from the burns detected the presence of hydroquinone, a compound found in skin lightening products, and polyethylene glycols, which have many uses including deodorizers, personal care products and fuel additives. When Moore’s apartment was searched, officers recovered multiple aerosol cans, cigarette lighters and butane torches.
Human male DNA was present in the vaginal swab, indicating that the dog was sexually assaulted while in Moore’s care, though the sample did not produce a “singular DNA profile.”
