IT SITS OUTSIDE THE CHARLES JACKSON FRENCH POST OFFICE ON MAPLE STREET. FRENCH WAS ABOARD THE USS GREGORY WHEN JAPANESE GUNFIRE SUNK IT. HE SAVED THE LIVES OF 15 FELLOW SAILORS BY SWIMMING THROUGH SHARK INFESTED WATERS. HIS NEPHEW SAYS THE MARKER ALLOWS FRENCH’S STORY TO REACH AND INSPIRE MORE PEOPLE.
