East Providence fire boat rededicated to firefighter killed in Hurricane of ’38

East Providence on Monday rededicated its fire boat for a firefighter who was killed 86 years ago trying to save others in the Hurricane of 1938.

The fire department’s Marine 3 was named for Arthur H. Ring.

The city said Ring died Oct. 21, 1938, from injuries he suffered while attempting to rescue three people swept into high waters during the hurricane.

Ring’s sacrifice is recognized with a nameplate on Marine 3, which recently received an upgraded navigation system.

Members of Ring’s family, the mayor and the fire chief attended a rededication ceremony at the Bold Point Park boat dock.
