“He died a hero,” Mount Airy community honors fallen K-9 Draco

“He died a hero,” those are the words community members emphasized today at the Blackmon Amphitheatre as they honored the live of K9 Officer Draco.

“There is no doubt God was with us and sent Draco as our guardian angel to see us through this event,” said Mount Airy Police Department Chief Dale Watson.

On October 16th, what started out as a call for service for suspicious activity at the park for the MAPD, ended in tragedy.

“The series of events which followed included a vehicle pursuit, hit-and run traffic crash and a shootout which left K-9 Draco mortally wounded.”

Corporal Emily Hutchens was Draco’s handler and partner. Today, she shared the beginning of their journey that started back in 2022.

“Draco shaped my perspective of respect and trust. Draco was extremely hard-headed exactly like me which forced me to have more grit. My bound with K9 Draco continuously improved during K-9 school,” said Hutchens.

Draco saved at least 5 lives. He was trained in narcotics, tracking and apprehension and touched the hearts of many in his community.

“K-9 Draco did not lose his life, K-9 Draco sacrificed his life for the ones he loved and protected.”

Hundreds of people gathered today to remember the legacy Draco left behind.

“You found the ultimate reward at the end of your track. Draco you’re such a good boy.”
