San Jose: $20,000 reward offered in ‘Highway Slingshot Shooter’ case

SAN JOSE –  Authorities are offering $20,000 for the arrest of the person who has been shooting ball bearings at cars and buildings Highway 87, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

There has been more than $500,000 in damage to windows and agencies, companies and residences that have been hit, officials said. The SAP Center, the San Jose Museum of Art and the District Attorney’s Crime Lab have also been struck and a woman had her car windows blown out, according to authorities.

“We are asking for the public’s help to stop this destructive and dangerous spree,” said District Attorney Jeff Rosen. “This is not just property damage. People live and work behind those windows.”

The windows on residential and commercial buildings have been hit at least 20 times this year on the Highway 87 corridor, officials said. Investigators said that they believe whoever is responsible is using a slingshot to hurl metal bearings “at a potentially lethal speed.”

Anyone with information about the suspect can contact Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers by calling the line at 408-947-STOP or svcrimestoppers.org.
