A private citizen is offering up $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the possible suspect or suspects who vandalized St. Mary’s Catholic School last Saturday.
Kodiak Police Department Lt. Francis de la Fuente on Wednesday said the department was still investigating.
“We are working on leads right now,” de la Fuente said.
A school volunteer was the first person to see the vandalism.
“We had a volunteer come in, and I got the phone call right away,” Principal Teri Schneider told the Kodiak Daily Mirror.
She said someone tagged the entire outside of the school with black paint, including vulgarities, anti-religious insults and body parts.
The Kodiak Police Department was called to the scene to examine the damage and take a report.
Schneider said she has never recalled anything like this happening at the school.
“I cried when I saw it, and so did our volunteer maintenance person,” Schneider said. “It’s kind of disheartening when you put your heart and soul into a place and have something like that.”
After the police report was filed, Schneider said volunteers, including Bob and Justin Thran and Mike Sweeney, painted over the graffiti.
“In some sequence of events, Mr. Thran and his son, Justin, got some paint, came back and covered it,” Schneider said. “It’s hard to feel grateful that it happened just on the outside, but I am grateful because we’ve had a lot of people put a lot of work into the inside of the building.”
