San Jose: $10,000 reward offered in mail theft case

SAN JOSE – The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of two people caught on camera burglarizing a mail truck last week in San Jose, authorities said.

The theft was reported about 2 p.m. on June 9 at Sturla and Gavilan drives, said Postal Inspector Matthew Norfleet.

Footage of the theft, first aired by NBC Bay Area, showed a man and a woman taking several packages from the mail truck and placing them in a white four-door car.

“Because of the way mail trucks are loaded, it is difficult to say exactly how many pieces of mail were stolen, which is part of the reason we encourage postal customers in the area to report missing mail to postal inspectors if they were expecting deliveries they did not receive,” Norfleet said.

Norfleet also urged customers to report any unauthorized activity on their financial accounts.

The truck was locked at the time of the theft, said Norfleet. He added that many mail routes include areas where a carrier leaves the vehicle and delivers mail door to door.

Norfleet said mail theft is common, with postal inspectors arresting more than 2,400 people in 2018, the most recent year for which data is available.

Anyone with information about the theft can contact postal inspectors at 877-876-2455 or uspis.gov/report.
