$5,000 reward offered in Springville murder investigation

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — Detectives are offering a $5,000 reward to anyone in the public who can help lead to the arrest and conviction in a 2023 murder.

Michael Joshua Mayer, 23, was found early Saturday morning, Nov. 18, after he was gunned down at his Springville apartment near 200 South and 100 West. First responders took Mayer to the hospital and attempted life-saving measures, but he later died due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Nearly a year after Mayer’s murder, detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect.

The Springville Police Department had originally detained two people shortly after the shooting. Court documents indicate Amanda Bird, 44, was charged and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice after what detectives had described as a “lengthy standoff” at a nearby apartment.

After being taken into custody, Bird identified a suspect who allegedly shot and killed Mayer, saying she “just knew” because she “went out there,” according to court documents. After speaking with other witnesses and gathering additional information, detectives believe what Bird said wasn’t true.

Bird admitted to lying saying she knew the alleged suspect did not murder Mayer, according to court documents. She reportedly changed her story, telling detectives she “did not know anything” about what actually happened.

Bird was charged with obstruction of justice and failure to stop at the command of a police officer. According to court documents, Bird pleaded guilty to the obstruction of justice charge while the failure to stop charge was dismissed.

Bird was sentenced to 31 days in jail and 36 months of supervised probation and issued a $5,000 fine.

Lt. William Foster with the Springville Police Department confirmed no one else was charged in relation to the case.
