Brunswick man asks to ‘hit that joint one more time’ before being arrested for animal cruelty

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A 22-year-old man was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty after police say he failed to get immediate medical attention for his dog that was having seizures.

When officers arrived to a call about an animal welfare check, Brandon McIntosh was spraying a hose full stream into the dog’s mouth as it was experiencing grand mal seizures on April 15, according to a Glynn County Police Department report.

The officer told McIntosh to stop, as this was interfering with the dog’s ability to breathe.

According to the report, “Brandon is well known for drug use,” so the officer asked McIntosh what the dog could have ingested to cause the seizures. McIntosh said he didn’t know “and that he does not have any drugs,” the report said.

McIntosh said that the night before, the dog was dragging its feet and “said that the dog must have ate something at a friend’s house around 6 a.m.” The officer said the dog would have reacted to whatever drug was ingested before 1:30 p.m.

The dog was taken to the vet by Glynn County Animal Control with McIntosh’s permission and the officer told the veterinarian he did not know what the dog ingested because McIntosh would not tell him.

The veterinarian told the officer that the dog was suffering and “the longer the dog continues having seizures, the more likely the dog will suffer brain damage, and need to be euthanized,” the report said.

The dog was given a sedative to help stop the seizures. When the dog woke up, the heavy seizures continued and because of that, Animal Control told the officer that the dog had to be euthanized.

The officer discovered that McIntosh had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear through the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office and went to arrest him, but McIntosh was not home. A little while later, the officer found McIntosh “in the shelter beside his home” smoking marijuana.

The officer asked McIntosh why he didn’t get the dog medical attention sooner and McIntosh again claimed the dog must have gotten sick earlier in the morning.

Again, the officer asked McIntosh what drug the dog could have ingested. McIntosh claimed that he only smokes marijuana.

“Unfortunately, his claim of only marijuana used is not true,” the report stated.

After McIntosh was handcuffed, he asked the officer if he could “hit that joint one more time,” talking about the “marijuana cigarette roach” he threw on the ground when he first saw the officer, the report said.
