Paralyzed pup looking for new home, previous owners charged with felony animal cruelty

Coffee Bean was just five months old when he was brought to Great Plains SPCA for help. The brown-nosed pup with sweet eyes came in with hind limb paresis or partial paralysis in his hind legs. Great Plains veterinarians believed the source of that paralysis stemmed from trauma that caused damage to his spinal cord. They suspected abuse. Now, five months later, Coffee Bean’s original owner has been charged with felony animal cruelty in Johnson County, Kansas, and the happy-go-lucky puppy is looking for a new home. GPSPCA officials said while authorities were investigating this case, Coffee Bean began undergoing regular physical therapy. Veterinarians say while he has shown some improvement, it’s likely Coffee Bean will never be able to walk on his own. “Coffee Bean gets around really well in his wheelchair and has a great outlook on life,” officials with Great Plains said, calling him a typical puppy who loves everyone he meets, human and dog alike. “We are searching for a forever home for this special boy who is presently outgrowing his wheelchair and receiving ongoing physical therapy.”Officials with GPSPCA called charges in this case “justice” for Coffee Bean in a Facebook post.”Great Plains SPCA has seen an uptick in neglect and cruelty cases recently,” officials said in the post, “And we want to thank Johnson County for taking this case, and others, so seriously.”If you’re interested in learning more about Coffee Bean, and maybe becoming his forever home, you can email foster@greatplainsspca.org for information.
