A woman with dementia had taken a walk with her dog in the Utah mountain range in Emery County during the oppressive heat wave late last month and then she got lost; it had been her dog who stayed by her side and barked for several days until the two were rescued.

According to Utah authorities:

At the end of the day her dog saved her life.

It had been on June 24, when the woman went out to walk her dog near her family’s cabin when she never returned. Her family grew worried and searched for her the entire night. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Emery County Sheriff’s Office had received the report of the missing woman who had dementia still missing after more than a day. One of the conservation officers, James Thomas and his K-9 Kip began the search.

The officer had arrived shortly after dark; temperatures had reached 100 degrees during the day, but had already dropped to 55 degrees. K-9 Kip, trained and certified to track humans.

The officer and K-9 Kip tracked the entire area and around nearby cabins searching for the woman. In the remote distance, however the officer heard a dog barking about 3:30 a.m. The searchers headed towards the barking dog, thinking and hoping it was the missing woman’s dog. A neighbor contacted authorities and said he had been hearing a dog barking the previous day, and the barking had been coming from an area where there were no homes.

After gaining access to local security cameras, rescuers saw footage of the woman walking past with her dog, heading to the west. The officer and K-9 Kip began their search in that direction along with the concerned neighbor.

As they searched higher along the mountainside, they heard barking again, and it was growing louder. Kip reached the woman and her chocolate Labrador retriever, who never left his owner’s side even though the dog had not been leashed.

The missing woman was eventually found! The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and K-9 Kip remained with the woman until help arrived.

The woman was later transported by helicopter to the local hospital for medical evaluation. She was certainly grateful help had arrived, but the woman didn’t realize how long she had been missing and how wonderful it was to have found her and that hero dog safe.

Is there ever any doubt that dogs are our best friends? Humans don’t deserve dogs.
