Riviera Beach teen who ran into a burning apartment to save neighbor is recognized

It appears 18-year-old Jah’ere Robinson has what it takes to become a firefighter.The Riviera Beach teenager didn’t hesitate to help when his neighbor cried out for help on the night of Aug. 1.Local heroes: Good Samaritans who saved unconscious driver reunited with her, honored by Boynton Beach leaders”The lady runs up to me and she says my house is on fire, my house is on fire, hurry, help,” Robinson said.He ran to get his fire extinguisher from home and then ran back to fight the blaze.”When I get to the back, I see the fire from the stove to the roof and it caught the cabinet, it caught the roof and it was almost to the attic,” Robinson said. “I’m trying to breathe and see at the same time and just happened to put it out.”Your neighborhood: Local coverage from WPBF 25 NewsAssistant Fire Chief Keith Golden described Robinson’s actions as heroic.”Because he initiated a stop, it slowed it down just enough so once my firefighters got there, they were able to put it completely out and minimized the damage to the home,” Golden said.Robinson received the Community Heroes Award earlier this month.Fire Chief John Curd said the actions taken by Robinson potentially saved lives and saved that apartment building as a whole.The department has offered to help him pursue his career as a firefighter.”Once he graduates from high school, we’ll put him in the Cohort program at Palm Beach State College and we’ll follow him all the way through the program until he actually gets hired and offer any assistance we can,” Golden said.The teenager has overcome hardships during his young life. He was hit by a stray bullet two years ago while taking out the trash.”I was what probably, like, in the hospital six months straight,” Robinson said. “I thankfully made it through and stayed alive.”His principal at Riviera Beach Preparatory and Achievement Academy, Mark Simmonds, remembers that day.”He was coming to school with the big metal piece stuck into his leg and he came, and he persevered through that,” Simmonds said. “He’s just a good kid. He’s destined for some success you know.”Robinson is grateful.”I’m looking at it as good things come out of nowhere,” he said. “I don’t know what it is, yeah, but it did come out of nowhere, yeah!”His principal is proud.”To hear that one of my kids got the community hero award that was just awesome,” Simmonds said. “I just had to spread the word.”Follow us on social: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
