Superman’s Most Underrated Ally Returns In New Preview

Warning: contains a preview of Action Comics #1048!Perhaps Superman’s most underrated ally Bibbo makes his grand return in a preview for Action Comics #1048. Bibbo was a staple of Superman comics in the early to mid-1990s, but has made only sporadic appearances since. Now, with the Man of Steel needing as many allies as he can get, Bibbo steps up to help.

Suicide Slum is one of the roughest areas of Metropolis, and Bo “Bibbo” Bibbowsky calls it home. A bartender by trade, Bibbo first appeared in 1987’s Adventures of Superman #428, created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway. Bibbo is one of Superman’s biggest fans, referring to the Man of Steel as his “fav’rit.” Bibbo has even come to Superman’s aid at times. Bibbo was a huge presence in the Superman comics of the 1990s, sometimes referred to as “The Triangle Era,” but as it began to wind down, so did his appearances, and Bibbo was largely forgotten. Recently, Superman liberated Warworld, bringing Kryptonian refugees to Earth, and now he is helping them assimilate to Earth life – with Bibbo there to help!

In a preview of Action Comics #1048, Lois Lane has brought two of Warworld’s refugees – the children Otho-Ra and Osul-Ra – to the Metropolis Zoo. As the children try to grasp the concept of a zoo, Lois also informs them that she brought them by to meet “one of our friends” The interaction is an adorable moment, and shows how while he’s a global hero, Superman is also a Metropolis local, and he knows and loves the people of his city. The issue is written by Philip Kennedy Johnson, drawn by Mike Perkins, colored by Lee Loughridge and lettered by Dave Sharpe.

Bibbo Is the Ally Superman Needs

Close

Bibbo might look and talk tough, but Superman fans know deep down, he is a softie – and also one of Superman’s staunchest allies, something the Man of Steel desperately needs right now. As seen elsewhere in the preview, the situation with the Warworld refugees is growing serious. Lex Luthor’s plans will no doubt take up more and more of Superman’s time and attention – which is where allies like Bibbo come in. As seen in this preview, the two children from Warworld instantly take to Bibbo, and he to them. While Bibbo does not have superpowers, he has heart. Superman is a hero not because of his godlike power, but because he was raised to want to help others – an influence Bibbo can bring to the lives of the Warworld children.

Bibbo’s return comes just as Clark Kent has returned to Earth, and to the role of Superman. A new era will soon be debuting for the Superman line of titles, and Bibbo will be a part of it. The Warworld refugee problem will not be ending anytime soon, meaning Superman will need all the help he can get to make sure the people he’s saved find a true home on Earth.
