ELKINS — Randolph County resident Chad Ware was one of three local winners of the Extra Mile Hero Award, recently presented by Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco.
Extra Mile America, the organization coordinating this program, said the purpose of Extra Mile Day is to celebrate the capacity everyone has to create positive change in their families, organizations and communities by “going the extra mile.”
More than 20 local people or organizations were nominated for the honor, which is awarded to those who go the extra mile in heart, mind and action.
During 2021, Ware, who works for Davis Health System, led the charge as COVID-19 vaccination clinic coordinator at a mass clinic that ran for months at the Phil Gainer Community Center in Elkins. The clinic administered thousands of vaccines to citizens throughout the area.
“Chad worked tirelessly to keep our town safe over the past year and a half through the pandemic,” Marco said. “Chad utilized his great organizational skills to put together a COVID vaccination clinic in Elkins to help provide vaccines for those in need. His efforts have saved many lives in the community.”
Ware was lauded by his co-workers both during and after the clinic ended. He received a certificate from all of the volunteers who worked alongside him at the clinic, was given a Key to the City of Elkins and also received a certificate of appreciation from Gov. Jim Justice.
On Nov. 1, 528 cities across the United States, including Elkins, declared that day as Extra Mile Day in their city. Extra Mile Day celebrates the capacity we each have to create positive change in families, organizations, communities and ourselves when we “go the extra mile.”
The day is set aside to honor individuals and organizations who are “going the extra mile” in volunteerism and service to make the world a bit better for the rest of us. The Inter-Mountain will publish articles about the other local Extra Mile Hero Award winners in the coming editions.
