$25k worth of sports memorabilia stolen from northwest San Antonio card shop

After only being open for two months, a Northwest Side card and collectibles shop in San Antonio has experienced a devastating loss after about $25,000 worth of high-end sports memorabilia was stolen from the shop on Saturday, April 23.

Victor Nava, the owner of Boomtown Sports Cards & Collectibles, told MySA the robbery set his store back to square one, adding they’ve been trying to get their feet on the ground since opening its location on Bandera and Prue roads.

“It’s devastating the amount of product that was taken from here,” Nava, 36, said. “It’s pretty shocking.”

Nava found out about the crime after receiving a notification on his phone of how someone shattered his glass window with a brick at around 2:50 a.m. on Saturday. His mother, who lives five minutes from the shop, also was sent an alert.

SAPD believes the suspects stole the items within 30 seconds to a minute.

When she arrived, the San Antonio Police Department had already dispatched to the shop within nine minutes from the notification.

SAPD believes the suspects stole the items within 30 seconds to a minute, Nava said. As of Wednesday, April 27, no leads have led to an arrest. The shop was offering a $2,000 award for any information leading to the arrest of the individuals. Thanks to a donor, the reward has now increased to $4,000.

“I really hope we can find them,” Nava, who has a 4-year-old son, said while choking up. “It angers me because everything I do is for my son. When I built this business, and when I come to work for 14-hour days, I do it for his future. So, when I walked in to see everything smashed and broken, it hit me emotionally because this is all for him.”

The owner told MySA the suspects used a brick to break into the store.

Despite the robbers stealing nearly everything from his stock, Nava remains hopeful. He fixed the shattered window, the damaged floors from the brick thrown, installed a security cage, and restocked supplies.

He plans to host a welcome back party from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, at the shop on 10350 Bandera Road.

“We’re taking very, very big and quick steps to open up again because we want to show that this is not putting us down,” Nava said. “You know, we are coming back stronger. We’re very resilient. We are going to be here for the community, and we can’t wait to open back up tomorrow to be here for everyone.”
