Woman whose body believed to have been found in pond had recently come out of rehab

The 24-year-old woman who went missing Monday and whose body police suspect was recovered from a Madison pond Thursday had recently come out of rehab and was reportedly living with the convicted felon police are now questioning in her disappearance, a relative said Friday.

Ann Stratton, Brooke L. Strattan’s paternal grandmother, said Brooke had been squatting in an empty West Side Madison townhouse with the man before she was reported missing on Tuesday by her parents, who live in McFarland.

The man was taken into custody on a state Department of Corrections warrant Wednesday night as police investigated Brooke’s disappearance, according to Madison police spokesperson Stephanie Fryer.

“As of now, the man does not face charges in the disappearance of Brooke,” she said. The Wisconsin State Journal is not naming him because he has not been named as a suspect or charged with a crime.

Brooke was reported missing on Tuesday and had not been seen since about 7 a.m. the day before near Odana Road and Whitney Way, Madison police said.

On Thursday night, police pulled a body from a pond a little more than a mile to the east, near Monroe Street at Lewis Court on Madison’s Near West Side. The body’s description matched that of Strattan.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office had not released the person’s identity or cause of death as of Friday afternoon.

Brooke’s father, Kevin Strattan, and Ann Stratton said Brooke had come out of rehab about a month ago but had relapsed. Ann said she had reconnected with the man police took into custody, and whom she had been dating for several months but had known since middle school.

Kevin said his daughter had had substance abuse problems for a while. Online court records show she pleaded no contest to a county ordinance violation for possession of drug paraphernalia in August 2020, but she had no other serious legal problems.

Both he and Ann remembered Brooke as a caring person who graduated from McFarland High School where she played tennis and won accolades for her piano playing as a sophomore at a state competition. She had worked for a year and a half or two years as a phlebotomist and most recently had been a delivery driver, they said.

Kevin said he’d been seeing a lot of messages from people who knew Brooke who “really felt she was a caring person (who) helped them through hard times.”

“She really loved to help people,” he said. “I think she had aspirations of maybe getting into counseling or psychology.”

Ann Stratton said Brooke would help her clear leaves and mow her property south of McFarland, and she and her cousin used to accompany her hiking in Montana.

“She would hike farther than anybody else,” Ann said.

Brooke is also survived by her parents, Kevin and Sharon, and her younger brother, Brandon.

Police are asking people who live between Odana Road and the area of Monroe Street where the body was discovered to check their security video.

Police asked that anyone who has information about the incident to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or P3Tips.com. Information can be shared anonymously. Tipsters who provide information that leads to an arrest also may qualify for a monetary reward.
