🌱 ‘At Home’ To 2900 Bellflower Blvd + LB Mask Mandate Post 15th?

Hello, neighbors, and happy National Pizza Day! It’s me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

At Home will replace the old Kmart at the Los Altos Gateway. Also, will we still wear masks after next week Tuesday? Finally, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on Artesia and Rose.

First, today’s weather:

Sunny and very warm. High: 84 Low: 55.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. When the Kmart at 2900 Bellflower Blvd. closed permanently last year, we didn’t know if it meant the end for businesses at the Los Altos Gateway. However, on Tuesday we learned that At Home, a “home decor superstore,” will open at the location on April 30. The company already “operates 235 stores in 40 states.” (LB Business Journal)

  2. California’s mask mandate is scheduled to end on February 15. Then, the rules will change to “require unvaccinated people to wear masks indoors, and everyone—vaccinated or not—will have to wear masks in higher-risk areas like public transit and nursing homes and other congregate living facilities.” However, there’s no telling if LB will follow suit. “We’re in active discussions at the state, county, and local level, but it’s too early to say what benchmarks we’ll be using or which requirements we’ll be relaxing,” a health department spokesperson explained. L.A. County’s health officials have signaled that they “intend to keep their mask mandate in place beyond the state deadline.” (LB Post)

  3. On Monday, at around 11:15 p.m., a 37-year-old pedestrian lost his life in a hit-and-run. It happened at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Rose Avenue, where he “was standing in the eastbound lanes of Artesia Boulevard, outside a crosswalk, when he was struck by a dark-colored sedan.” Investigators say that “speed is believed to be a factor.” Please call Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at (562)570-7355 with information. (LBPD)

  4. On Tuesday, the City canceled this year’s MLK Day parade. Initially, it was “temporarily delayed last month over concerns about a spike in COVID-19 cases.” Mayor Robert Garcia explained that the “city continues to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King in the everyday work we do as a community.” Moreover, he’s “looking forward to a great celebration next year and for many years to come.” (LB Post)

  5. Justin Rudd is one of the people who add to the quality of life for everyone in the City. A good example is Riley’s Red Wagon Book Swap at 3040 East 1st Street, which allows passersby to take up to five books home for free. We learned last week that the wagon was stolen on February 1. However, you can’t keep a good man down. On Sunday, Rudd hosted a grand reopening of a new red wagon with “the police chief, firefighters, Councilwoman Price, pageant titleholders,” and plenty of fans in attendance! (Justin Rudd, 2)
