VINCENT — The weather was not giving any favors to the firefighters battling an early morning blaze at a farm outside Vincent on Sunday.

According to Vincent Fire Department Firefighter Aaron Martin, a shed fire at 1718 Union Ave. was called in at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.

“We were coming down the road and we could see on the south side of the silos, just big, black smoke rolling everywhere,” Martin said.

He said the crews had most of the fire knocked down within about half an hour.

“We’re not sure how it started or anything,” Martin said. “But it was a total loss. We couldn’t save anything from it.”

Black smoke billows from a structure fire at a farm at 1718 Union Ave. outside of Vincent on Sunday morning.

The weather caused plenty of issues for the firefighters, Martin said. With the wind chill around -7 degrees Fahrenheit, two pumpers froze up and the valves on the water trucks kept freezing and had to be thawed with a torch.

The crews used about 30,000 gallons of water from the city of Vincent, as well as water from the Koch Nitrogen plant, to fill up the tankers, Martin added.

The Vincent Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Duncombe, Otho, Badger, Woolstock and Clare. Martin said he wasn’t sure how many firefighters were on scene.

“There were people everywhere,” he said.

The crews spent about two and a half hours battling the fire and extinguishing all the hot spots, Martin said.
