First responders in Harrison save unconscious woman in heroic roadside CPR effort

HARRISON (WGME) — In the right place at the right time. That’s how Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies describe a life-saving effort Saturday morning in Harrison.

Cumberland County Patrol Lieutenant Jim Estabrook says they were responding to a shooting in Harrison early Saturday morning.

While Cumberland County deputies were investigating that shooting on Waterford Road, an off duty firefighter happened to be out on a walk when he noticed a car crashed into this rock embankment across from his fire station on School Street.

He noticed a woman was still inside. A police sergeant who just left the shooting scene was close by too.

“This woman was found unconscious in the car with no pulse,” said Estabrook.

Estabrook says that’s when one of their sergeants arrived to the scene of the single car crash.

Both the sergeant and the firefighter pulled the woman out of the car and began performing CPR.

In their life-saving efforts, they had to resort to using an AED defibrillator. That’s when they felt her pulse return.

She was taken by ambulance to Bridgton Hospital before being life-flighted to Central Maine Medical Center.

Fire Chief Dana Laplante credits both of those first responders efforts in saving this woman’s life.

“The stars aligned and a little bit of luck for the patient and first responders. It’s not something you see often,” said Laplante.

Estabrook shared good news Sunday about her recovery.

“We’re happy to say this morning she is communicating. She’s going to be in the hospital for a while but is expected to recover,” said Estabrook.

Cumberland County sheriff’s say the sergeant was not available to talk about his efforts Sunday as he was prioritizing some much needed rest.
