Former Union assistant fire chief dies in Columbia water rescue

Local emergency workers are remembering former Union Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matt Tobben as a talented fire professional and a wonderful person. Tobben died in the line of duty early Monday in a water rescue.

In his new position with the Boone County Fire Protection District, Tobben was working with a Columbia Fire Department firefighter to save two people in a swift water rescue near the Rangeline Street bridge at Bear Creek in Columbia when he drowned, according to Boone County Fire Chief Scott Olsen.
