FARGO — Homeward animal shelter hosted a one-day animal rescue workshop. Helen Woodward Animal Center flew in from San Diego to lead the conference and give tips.
Jessica Gercke with Helen Woodward Animal Center says she’s been impressed with the strength of the community here.
“We travel all over, and what I’m really seeing here is a real sense of community and working together to save lives. So that is something that they already have. And I’m just really, really moved and touched by it. I do hope that any of the ideas that we give them might help them expand the work they do, might make it easier,” Gercke said.
The workshop included a series of presentations and discussions about running animal welfare organizations like a business, as opposed to a nonprofit.
Those who came now have new fundraising methods, marketing techniques, and best practices they can use for adoption success.

“It’s a really challenging business that we’re all in, and finding ways to run it like an actual business versus a nonprofit is going to help the people as well as the animals,” Gercke said.
Gercke says a key takeaway from the workshop is the importance of finding ways to get their mission out to the world.
Those in the community had the opportunity to also speak out and share their own tips they had to help others be successful.
