Multiple rowhomes burned by 3-alarm fire, firefighter injured

A rapid popping sound alerted Hicham Ahmidy and several of his neighbors to the fire.”It was like, ‘Pop, pop, pop,’ like something like popping,” Ahmidy told 11 News. “Fireworks in the morning, like 3 o’clock in the morning, like kids playing with it, that is the only thing that comes to mind.””I saw an orange glow outside my window. I came out to check it out; it was a big blazing fire,” said a resident who identified himself as Jeff.A firefighter who suffered minor injuries was taken to a hospital. No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Cost estimates of the damage were not yet tallied.The fire left several families displaced as they gathered what was left of their belongings. A resident who identified herself only by her first name, Anita, told 11 News she fears she and her daughter have lost everything.”Everything is gone. They threw everything out the window,” Anita told 11 News.In some homes, the fire torched second floors, while in others, the entire structure has been condemned.The sound of people cutting plywood filled the street later in the day as restoration crews boarded up doors and windows.One couple told 11 News they just moved into their rowhome on Monday. They managed to grab two pet cats while fleeing the flames. They don’t know yet whether they have anything left to save in the house.The Red Cross is assisting 15 people who were displaced, some of whom told 11 News they will stay with friends or relatives.
