South Texas Blood and Tissue celebrates 5 million blood donations, honors donor

SAN ANTONIO – A history-making day for South Texas Blood and Tissue, as the organization celebrates its five-millionth blood donation.

San Marcos firefighter Barrett Barbour was honored for his generosity during a special ceremony today in New Braunfels.

Barrett says he’s been donating Type-O Negative blood for the past two years.

“It was a surprise to me,” said Barbour. “I appreciate getting to donate and help other people, save lives. It’s a small gesture for me but I’m glad it means a lot to other people.”

His blood is in high demand because O-negative blood can help anyone in emergencies when a person requires immediate blood transfusion and there is no time to test their blood group.
